DGTL Podcast #96 - Barely Legal

The London-based DJ Chloe, also known as Barely Legal, is ensuring that we get our feet moving with this fire and high energy mix varied with bass, techno, and overall heavy hard-hitting vibes.

Chloe Robinson, is known for curating the Room 2 at Fabric two years in a row under her brand & label ‘Pretty Weird’ and she has a frequent presence in radio shows such as Rinse FM, BBC 1XTRA and NTS Radio. We wanted to get to know this multi-genre artist more and therefore asked her some questions:

Q. So tell us, how has the past year been for you?

A. The year started off difficult, my industry was the first to lose their jobs and last to get them back. I still don’t have my job back and have no idea when shows will actually be able to go ahead again. I decided to relocate myself at the start of September because my mental health was bad and London wasn’t feeling like a good place to be at the time. DJing isn’t just a form of income for me, it’s part of my identity and happiness, so to have that stripped away has been hard. I moved to Mexico for 6 months and now I’m currently living in Colombia. I decided to turn my negative headspace into a positive and feel grateful for the things I do have. I have my Rinse FM residency once a month so I’m still able to showcase new music from artists as well as old tunes I’ve found from having literally all the time in the world to crate dig. Being able to just move to the other side of the world and live off savings, live on my own (which was never viable in London) and just being able to put my London life on hold until my job returns is actually a luxury, and it’s an experience I’ll never get again. I guess I figured that this pandemic is out of my control, so patience and optimism is key.

Q. How would you describe your sound to the readers who are not familiar with ‘Barely Legal’ yet?

A. My sound is dark, wonky, heavy and eclectic. I play everything ranging from 90s UKG to techno to dnb. I’d like to think of myself as a DJ for the heads. My taste has developed and expanded since first touching decks 10 years ago and this is pretty apparent in my sets. At the moment I’m very much into my techno and electro- this mix is very techno heavy.

Q. Has your way of working and DJ’ing changed due to the pandemic?

A. During the beginning of the pandemic I felt an immense pressure to create excessive content to stay relevant and not be forgotten about which actually caused a lot of stress and was unnecessary. As the months have gone on I’ve learned to use this as an opportunity to breathe and enjoy my spare time rather than panic and compare. It’s also been a time where I had to think out of the box and be creative in other areas for income such as designing and creating merchandise for my label. It’s consisted of lots of streams and mixes basically for the most part.

Q. Where do you get your inspiration from & how have you stimulated your creativity during this period?

A. My creativity is high when my motivation is high and my motivation is high when I’m mentally feeling okay- so this has been inconsistent as I’m sure it has for most people in this line of work. My inspiration usually comes from other people’s energy who I’m around, endless crate digging sessions on YouTube have been fun and helped me find a lot more music beyond my promos.

Q. What do you like to do when you’re not working on your music?

A. Painting on walls- joking- not joking. My ADHD means I get bored pretty easily and crave stimulation, but I’ve stopped that now because I was rubbish and it’s illegal. I also bought a BMX, I used to think I could BMX when I was 14, as well as paint, so I guess I’ve been having a quarter life crisis. The BMX has been used about 4 times.

Q. What is the story behind the podcast, any tracks or parts of the mix you would like to highlight?

A. Most of the tracks are tunes I’ve found through all nighters of YouTube crate digging which I find super fun- I’m super fussy with my taste in music, especially techno, so it’s a mix of my top tier finds haha, mixed with a few new and unreleased bits! There are quite a few off key, wonky and weird tunes in it which is deffo my style.
