We sat down with Lucky Done Gone to talk about his latest release on DGTL Records, The Look EP, which dropped today. The EP showcases the beauty of contrast, blending euphoric melodies with raw, tribal grooves to embody the energy of the dancefloor. Here’s what Lucky Done Gone shared about the creative journey behind the release.
A celebration of self-expression
The origins of ‘Fashion Nova’ lie in the vibrant energy of festival season. Reflecting on its creation, Lucky Done Gone explains: “At the start of the festival season, I was struck by how people dressed: bold, stylish, and expressive. Seeing people dance and showcase their individuality sparked the idea for the track. It’s a representation of how people feel free on the dancefloor, dressing and showing themselves.” His experiences didn’t stop there. Fashion events played a big role too. “I stumbled into some fashion catwalks, and the energy between the music and the stylish atmosphere inspired me. It reminded me of the festival crowd full of beautiful people expressing themselves freely on the dance floor. That’s what ‘Fashion Nova’ is all about.”
Experiences during a night out
While ‘Fashion Nova’ embraces euphoria, its counterpart, ‘The Energy’, explores a darker, groove-driven sound. Lucky Done Gone explains: “It’s about contrast: this track is more tribal, groove-driven, with emotional swings and euphoric melodies. It reflects the deeper intensity of the dance floor.” Together, the tracks tell a story of highs and lows, mirroring the range of emotions on experiences during a night out.
A balance of spontaneity and organization
His approach to music is a balance of spontaneity and organization. “I get ideas while cooking or in the shower. I record voice notes on my phone, and later, I bring them into the studio,” he shares. While creativity often comes unexpectedly, structure still plays a role. “I love structure, but creativity doesn’t always work that way. It’s about staying organized while leaving room for inspiration to take over.”
A milestone in his career
The release of ‘The Look’ EP marks a meaningful milestone in his career. His relationship with DGTL Records began in 2016, during his internship. “My first release ever was on their five-year compilation, which felt like a milestone. It felt right to follow it up with a solo EP on the label.” This journey reflects his growth as an artist. “A year ago, I quit my day job to focus entirely on my music. It was a huge step, but it’s allowed me to challenge myself and work toward building a sustainable career. The industry is always changing, and so am I. Staying true to myself while adapting to change is key.”
