In collaboration with Stichting NDSM-werf, we commissioned artist SEEYOUSIOE to create a stunning art piece on the iconic container arch for the annual DGTL festival at NDSM. We sat down with the versatile queer artist to talk about her work, vision and this specific piece.

Meet Sioe Jeng Tsao, or SEEYOUSIOE, a queer artist and activist of Chinese descent born and raised in Amsterdam. Their artistic journey is a fusion of personal experiences and social consciousness, weaving together narratives that explore a diverse array of themes.

Exploring social themes through art

SEEYOUSIOE’s work isn’t confined to a canvas; it’s a vibrant tapestry of social commentary. She believes that “Art has the power to amplify voices and shine a light on issues that are often silence.” For Sioe, art is more than just aesthetics; it’s a language that speaks volumes about society. She says, “Art is a catalyst for change, sparking conversations and challenging perceptions.”

Inspiration behind EMPOWER (executed by Naomi King)

For the container arch at DGTL, SEEYOUSIOE crafted ‘EMPOWER,’ a beacon of reflection and celebration. Inspired by Amsterdam’s evolving landscape for the LGBTQIA+ community, the artwork serves as a rallying cry for unity and solidarity. According to SEEYOUSIOE, “‘EMPOWER’ symbolizes the resilience and strength of our community, urging us to stand together in love and empowerment.”

Festivals aren’t just about music and merriment; they’re platforms for social discourse. SEEYOUSIOE believes that festivals, like art, can spark conversations and drive awareness. “Festivals offer a unique opportunity to engage diverse audiences and create meaningful dialogue around pressing social issues”, she notes.

Creative process & influences

SEEYOUSIOE’s creative process is a reflection of their identity and experiences. Drawing inspiration from personal narratives and diverse perspectives, she crafts art that resonates on a profound level. She emphasizes, “My surroundings and interactions shape my art, infusing it with authenticity and depth.”

When viewers experience ‘EMPOWER,’ SEEYOUSIOE hopes to evoke a myriad of emotions. From solidarity and strength within the LGBTQIA+ community to contemplation and empathy, the artwork is a catalyst for introspection and action. “I want viewers to feel empowered and encouraged, to recognize the significance of love and inclusivity in driving social change”, they say.

We can’t wait to experience the art work in real life during DGTL Amsterdam this weekend.
